Views of Maya ruins in the Yucatan. 1873.

Cabinet card views taken by archaeologist Augustus Le Plongeon and his wife, journalist Alice D. Le Plongeon, during their archaeological campaigns in the Yucatan peninsula. Included are general views of the ruins at Chichén Itzá and Uxmal (more than half are of the Nunnery Quadrangle), with many detailed views of sculptural reliefs. Augustus appears in two images, including one that shows him lounging against the Chac Mool statue that the couple discovered at Chichén Itzá. Nearly half of the views include Alice and/or native workers. Includes a studio portrait of Alice Le Plongeon.

Biographical/Historical Note Augustus Henry Julian Le Plongeon was born on Jersey, Channel Islands on May 4, 1826. After graduating from the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris he embarked on a series of adventures in the Americas, beginning with an attempt to sail to Chile with a friend in the late 1840s.
